Student Use of Personal Internet-Enabled Devices
Bell to Bell: Personal Devices Off and Away
Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, the Township of Union Public Schools will implement updated requirements regarding student use of personal internet-enabled devices during the school day.
In accordance with New Jersey law and guidance from the New Jersey Department of Education, personal internet-enabled devices must be turned off, put away, and not used from the first bell to the last bell.
What Does Bell to Bell Mean?
Unless an exception applies under state law or district policy, students may not use or have personal internet-enabled devices visible at any time during the school day, including:
• Cell phones
• Smartwatches
• Tablets and other personal internet-enabled devicesThis applies during classes, lunch, passing periods, and all other times between the first and last bell.
Why Is TUPS Implementing This Policy?
Reducing access to personal devices during the school day is intended to:
• Improve student focus and engagement
• Support academic success
• Reduce classroom distractions
• Encourage meaningful, in-person interactions
• Support student social and emotional well-beingStaying Connected With Your Child
We understand that families need reliable ways to communicate with their children.
In an emergency: Parents and caregivers should contact their child's school main office. Staff will ensure that important messages are delivered promptly.
Students who need to contact home: Students may visit the main office for assistance contacting a parent or caregiver.
Grades 6 through 12: Students may use StudentSquare to communicate with their parents and caregivers on their Chromebooks.

Student Teaching in TUPS
Are you an education major looking to complete your student teaching? We’re proud to partner with Kean University, Seton Hall University, and Montclair State University to offer hands-on classroom experience in our diverse and supportive schools.
How to Apply
1. Talk to Your Advisor
Let your college advisor know you want to student teach in the Township of Union Public Schools.2. University Sends a Request
Your school’s placement office must email a formal request on university letterhead to:
Ann Hart – ahart@tups.org3. Placement Approval
If approved, we’ll find the best placement for you.4. Final Confirmation
We’ll send the completed placement form back to your university and submit it for Board of Education approval.5. University Notifies You
Your school will share the details of your final placement.Required Documents
All student teachers must email the following:
Criminal History Background Check (archived to Union, Union County 39 5290)
Negative Mantoux Test result
Substitute Certificate (optional but encouraged)
You cannot begin your placement until all documents are submitted and approved by the Board of Education. No exceptions.
